Armstrong says no place for so-called punishment shootings

Strangford Alliance MLA Kellie Armstrong has said there is no place for so-called punishment shootings, after a man was shot in the arms and legs in Newtownards.

The 23-year-old was shot in Dakota Avenue in the Westwinds estate. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, and he remains in a stable condition in hospital.

“There is never an excuse for this sort of act and I utterly condemn it,” said Ms Armstrong.

“I have been working lately with residents in the area who are concerned about the rise of paramilitary activity in Westwinds and other estates. This includes unwelcome displays of paramilitary paraphernalia on Housing Executive and social housing property.

“Police, political parties and community representatives must come together and work with all appropriate agencies to remove such intimidation from the community and ensure the atmosphere which fosters these sorts of attacks is removed.

“I would encourage anyone with information on this incident to contact police immediately.”
