Alliance MLA Kellie Armstrong has said she is hopeful Northern Ireland will benefit from a funding pot for Changing Places toilets, expected to be announced in tomorrow’s Westminster Budget.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak is expected to announce £30 million for Changing Places toilets in England. Under Barnett consequentials, it could mean a financial boost for the accessible toilets to be installed in locations here.
“Changing Places toilets provide the opportunity for older children and adults with disabilities or limited ability to be able to be changed on an appropriately sized changing table, rather than on the floor. Space is slightly larger than the current design of disabled toilet, allowing two carers to assist the person safely,” said the Strangford MLA.
“It will be up to the Executive to allocate any money coming as a result of the Chancellor’s Budget. Given part of it will be monies derived from an allocation of £30 million specifically for Changing Places toilets, I would ask the Executive to enable the money to be spent on provision of more such toilets here.
“It is time we provide basic facilities suiting the needs of every citizen. I call on the Executive to enable the allocation from the Chancellor to reflect the investment being made in England and to use this portion of money for Changing Places toilets in Northern Ireland.”
