Armitage welcomes graffiti removal

Alliance Councillor David Armitage has welcomed the removal of sectarian graffiti which had been daubed in the Sydenham area.

The graffiti was painted on a wall on the corner of Connsbrook Avenue and Strandburn Street. It has since been painted out after receiving widespread condemnation. It is one of a number of pieces of sectarian graffiti to have been put up in Belfast in recent weeks.

East Belfast Councillor Mr Armitage said he was pleased the graffiti had been removed but added it should not have appeared in the first place.

“There can be no justification for this graffiti or similar occurrences. It is appalling that some people would still retain attitudes such as these in our society. There is no place for anyone to have such a sectarian outlook.

“I welcome the widespread condemnation it received from all quarters but I would also appeal to all those who have influence in these communities to use it to work together to help remove attitudes such as these, which lead to this sort of graffiti.

“I hope this is the last such incident of this nature and would urge anyone with information to contact police immediately.”
