Alliance welcomes research funding boost to tackle Alzheimer’s disease

Alliance Employment and Learning Spokesperson Chris Lyttle MLA and Coleraine Alliance Councillor Yvonne Boyle have welcomed news that a grant of just under £100,000 has been provided by Alzheimer’s Research UK to scientists at University of Ulster in Coleraine to investigate whether a diabetes drug could help treat Alzheimer’s disease. Chris Lyttle MLA said: “Alzheimer’s disease has a devastating impact on many people and I am pleased to see this funding being allocated for research into a possible treatment. “The award of this grant illustrates the expertise we have in Northern Ireland on medical research. This excellent news demonstrates that research and development is a very strong area for Northern Ireland and this is a real boost to our economy. This news highlights the excellent standard of universities we have here.” Coleraine Alliance Councillor Yvonne Boyle, who is also a social worker said: “This is very positive news for University of Ulster in Coleraine and I want to praise their hard work in securing this funding. Alzheimer’s disease affects many people – progress on treatment is very important and I want to wish staff at the university well with their research. I did my degree in social work at University of Ulster in Coleraine and I am very pleased about this news.” ENDS
