Alliance welcomes Green Flag status for Belmont Park

Alliance representatives have praised the joint-up approach behind Belmont Park receiving its first Green Flag award.

The national award for public and community parks and green spaces, the Green Flag award scheme recognises and rewards the best green spaces across the country.

East Belfast Councillor Laura McNamee, who sits on a community planning group at Belfast City Council, said the hard work of the local community and a number of statutory agencies could be credited with the park gaining the top environmental award.

She said: “I wholeheartedly congratulate everyone who has worked hard to bring Green Flag status to Belmont Park.

“The park is a well-used vibrant open space and this award proves what first class facilities it has to offer.

“Green Flag status is awarded partly due to community involvement and special praise must go to Friends of Belmont Park, whose members have worked hard to ensure the park remains an area of natural beauty. Other groups can learn from their example and get involved with community planning, enhancing local assets.”

Chris Lyttle, East Belfast MLA, said: “Community representatives, DRD Roads Service and Belfast City Council parks staff have all shown a great commitment to making Belmont Park a special place for all, proving just how effective a joint-up approach can be.

“This joint-up approach on the environment must go to Executive level. Now is the time to invest in our environment, creating a green economy that will benefit the lives of everyone in Northern Ireland.”
