Alliance welcomes Ballymartin park and ride scheme

Alliance South Antrim MLA David Ford and Antrim Councillor Alan Lawther have welcomed the news that a park and ride scheme at Ballymartin, near Templepatrick, has been given the go ahead by the Regional Development Minister. The scheme will comprise 428 car parking spaces and will cost £3.8million. It will be completed by next summer.

David Ford MLA said: “Alliance has campaigned for a number of years for better public transport links in South Antrim to reduce congestion on the M2. However, for this park and ride scheme to be a success, it must have proper rail and bus links.”

Cllr Alan Lawther said: “As we look to encourage more people out of their cars and onto public transport, we must make sure the infrastructure is in place to ensure that there are viable alternatives to the private car. With the rising price of petrol, it can often be cheaper to use public transport but the services must be fit for purpose.

“I am very glad to see this park and ride scheme finally get approval. We have been waiting for this project for a number of years and I hope that when it opens next summer that it will be used by a large number of people.”
