Alliance Brexit spokesperson Stephen Farry MLA will meet tomorrow (Monday) with EU Chief Negotiator Michel Barnier and other senior Commission officials in Brussels to further set out how a special Brexit deal for Northern Ireland has cross-community support.
“Alliance is pleased to have this formal opportunity to further set out our position on Brexit,” he said.
“This comes as we enter absolutely critical weeks in the Brexit process, which potentially carry massive implications for the future direction of Northern Ireland. Not only did Northern Ireland vote to remain in the referendum, but surveys have shown a further increase in support of this. It is clear an overwhelming majority of people on all sides of the community want to stay in the Customs Union and Single Market.
“Neither the UK Government or the DUP are properly reflecting the real views of the people of Northern Ireland. Alliance is providing leadership on behalf of those people. Alliance has long been clear any special deal for Northern Ireland should be seen as a pragmatic way forward and would be entirely consistent with the principle of consent, devolution and the Good Friday Agreement.”
