Alliance supports NIPSA library protest

Speaking after attending a protest at Ballymacarrett Library on Tuesday, Alliance Assembly Member Cllr Naomi Long said that there was “great uncertainty about the future of Ballymacarret Library” following the publication of the BELBs Library Strategy.

Naomi Long “Whilst it is true that the Board has not made any formal decision to close the Library, Ballymacarrett Branch does not appear on the map of planned future provision, which is of great concern to those who use it.

“We all recognise that there is a need to modernise library service provision, but the local community’s needs must be fully considered as part of any planning process. Ballymacarrett Library provides a valuable service in a deprived community. It is not just a book-lending service, but also acts as a focal point and offers vital social contact for older people. It is also an important resource for local schools working to improve literacy and encourage active, life-long, independent learning.

“I am meeting with the Chief Executive of the Board this week to raise my concerns and I would encourage people to make their views known when public consultation starts in September.”
