Alliance selects Donnelly for West Tyrone

Alliance has selected Stephen Donnelly as the party’s candidate for the up-coming West Tyrone by-election.

Stephen was announced by Alliance Leader Naomi Long MLA during her speech at the Party’s annual Spring Conference on Saturday.

Speaking afterwards, Stephen said: “I’m delighted to have the backing of Alliance and to have been selected as the candidate to contest the by-election in West Tyrone.

“We are in challenging times, as the continued failure of devolved government at Stormont and on-going Brexit negotiations come against the backdrop of an unstable economy and stretched public services.

“We can and must do better.

“I’m delighted to be standing for Alliance, on a platform of providing a progressive alternative to the current deadlock, opposing a hard Brexit and putting forward our belief in the need for Northern Ireland to stay within the single market and to avoid a hard border.

“There are challenges ahead, but Alliance have the foresight to take the necessary next steps forward to not only strengthen Northern Ireland, but also deliver the kind of society we all believe in.”

More recently, we have held the first of our planned action days, starting in Omagh, led ably by our local team and supported by people from right across the party and I want to thank each of you who stepped forward to help. Most of all, I want to thank Stephen Donnelly for the commitment he has shown to maintaining that development work on the ground and providing a consistent and coherent voice for the Alliance Party’s values and vision.

I’m sure you will all want to join with me in congratulating Stephen on his official selection as our Candidate for the forthcoming Westminster by-election in West Tyrone. I hope that each of you will step forward and support him practically as we offer the people of West Tyrone a shared and inclusive vision for the future and full-time representation in Westminster.
