Alliance selects Coleraine by-election winner for East Londonderry Assembly election

Coleraine by-election winner Cllr Barney Fitzpatrick has been selected by Alliance to contest the Assembly elections in East Londonderry. Barney Fitzpatrick won the Skerries by-election in December following the resignation of former DUP Councillor Dessie Stewart after he pleaded guilty to electoral fraud. Cllr Fitzpatrick stated that December by-election result showed that people are fed up with sectarian politics and that Alliance is the real alternative for everyone.

Following his selection Cllr Barney Fitzpatrick said: “I am very privileged to have been selected to contest the next Assembly elections in East Londonderry for Alliance.

“The by-election result in December showed that people are sick of sectarian politics and they want real progress.

“It is the electoral test that Northern Ireland has faced since the St Andrews Agreement and it sent out a clear message on peoples’ disgust at tribal politics.

“Local people have another chance to stop the sectarian parties in their tracks in the Assembly elections.

“Segregation, lost opportunities and stagnation all cost local taxpayers billions of pounds and only Alliance offers an alternative and provides fresh ideas to help deliver the best services to everyone in Northern Ireland.

“We are the only party that has no hidden agenda on policing. We want the best policing and justice services possible for everyone in Northern Ireland to help eradicate gangsterism and anti-social behaviour.”
