Alliance reiterates support for rule of law following meeting with Chief Constable

An Alliance Party delegation of Policing Board member, Chris Lyttle MLA and Justice spokesperson, Stewart Dickson MLA, have met the new Chief Constable of the PSNI, George Hamilton.

Chris Lyttle MLA said: “We met with the new Chief Constable to reiterate our support for the rule of law and the PSNI. Political parties must give their full support to the Police at all times and avoid any actions that may undermine their authority.

“George Hamilton faces a challenging role as Chief Constable but I was pleased to hear about his plans for the PSNI and his approach to the policing of parades, protests and public disorder.

“During the Haass talks, Alliance put forward a number of proposals on the display of flags on public property, however there is a clear need for the Office of the First Minister and deputy First Minister to renew the flags protocol and for the PSNI to be willing to lead on enforcement when necessary.

“The threat from dissident republicans remains severe but I know the PSNI remains resolute in their commitment to stopping the activities of these individuals.

“I look forward to working with the Chief Constable as we look to build a safer and more united community.”
