Alliance motion sees PSNI get freedom of Castlereagh

The PSNI will receive the Freedom of the Borough in Castlereagh, after an Alliance-led proposal received unanimous cross-party support on Thursday night.

Councillor Carole Howard said the Alliance group wanted to recognise the dedicated service of PSNI officers, both who serve in the Borough and those from the Borough who serve across Northern Ireland.

She said: “I am delighted the PSNI will now receive the Freedom of the Borough of Castlereagh. This honour had formally been given to the RUC in 2000 and it is only right that PSNI officers now take up this tribute.

“Over the past 12 years the PSNI has faced many challenges in serving and protecting the community of Castlereagh, including two local officers who paid the ultimate sacrifice at the hands of terrorists.

“As the Borough of Castlereagh will cease to exist under the Reform of Public Administration, Alliance believes it is vital we pay tribute to those who have ensured the safety of everyone for so many years.

“I am delighted that all my Council colleagues were able to support this Alliance proposal, reaffirming our strong and united support for those who uphold the rule of law in what are very challenging times.”
