Coleraine Alliance Councillors have welcomed the town’s Olympic heroes home at special events across the town.
Councillor Yvonne Boyle and Councillor Barney Fitzpatrick joined the public celebrations at Coleraine Town Hall as silver medal rowers Richard and Peter Chambers and bronze medal winner Alan Campbell returned to celebrate their success. The Councillors then attended a special event in the Mayor’s Parlour.
Councillor Yvonne Boyle said: “We are so proud in Coleraine of the achievements of our rowers. We were all hooked during the Olympic Games and I am glad so many people came out to celebrate Coleraine’s Olympic heroes today.
“I want to again congratulate Richard, Peter and Alan on this tremendous achievement. I also want to praise the Bann Rowing Club, who through mentoring has helped these three Olympians achieve their dreams.
“Their sporting success should be inspiration for us all and I would like to see Bann Rowing Club secure continued funding to ensure we nurture future sporting talent.”
Councillor Barney Fitzpatrick said: “The years of hard work and determination have paid off and I am delighted to welcome home Richard, Peter and Alan, Coleraine’s Olympic heroes.
“The Alliance Party believes in a shared future for all and I want to praise all communities across Coleraine getting involved and supporting our Olympians. Rowing is a great sport and one that everyone can get involved with.
“Hopefully athletes from Coleraine will achieve the same success, if not better, at the games in Rio in 2016.”
