Alliance Attacks Sinn Fein Hypocrisy on Asylum

Alliance Party Justice Spokesperson, Stephen Farry, has accused Sinn Fein MEP Bairbre de Brun of gross hypocrisy in welcoming a EU Report on the rights of asylum seekers, while Republicans continue to exile thousands of people to both within and outside Northern Ireland.

Dr Farry stated:

“Sinn Fein would like to reinvent themselves as the champion of human rights and the defender of the downtrodden. They will not be able to get away with it until they address the gross hypocrisy in their backyard.

“In particular, it is a bit rich for Sinn Fein to be championing the noble cause of better systems for dealing with asylum seekers, while many people have been forced from their homes to seek asylum under threat from the IRA.

“Over the years, thousands of people have had to relocate to other parts of Northern Ireland or move overseas. Those forced to flee may have been suspected of criminal or anti-social behaviour, but if so, they deserved a fair trial, and have a right to return. Others were threatened for simply crossing the path of the local godfathers. This practice has not ceased, and there are no commitments from Republicans to lift the threats that prevent these people returning to their communities in safety.

“Sinn Fein will carry no credibility on the asylum issue until they ‘persuade’ the IRA to lift the threats against those that they forced to seek asylum elsewhere. It is time to bring them home.”
