Our roads need to be safe for all users of them, Alliance MLA Kellie Armstrong has said.
The Strangford MLA was speaking after facilitating a meeting between members of the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) and officials from the Department for Infrastructure (DFI) to discuss the use of wire rope crash barriers, which the group say pose a particular hazard to motorcyclists.
“I am committed to doing all I can to make our roads as safe as possible for all road users. That is particularly important in a mostly rural constituency such as Strangford,” said Ms Armstrong.
“Today’s meeting was an important one and I was pleased to facilitate it. The MAG want to see the removal of wire rope crash barrier across Northern Ireland and the DFI have accepted there is a hazard to motorcyclists who collide with one.
“There was agreement to promote the wider use of motorcycle protection barrier installations at high risk locations and to work with the local universities to research potential less harmful but still effective crash barriers. I hope this enables movement on this issue while continuing to make safety a priority.”
