Alliance MLA Chris Lyttle has hosted an event recognising the important contribution of the veterinary and agrifood community in Northern Ireland.

Mr Lyttle hosted the British Veterinary Association (BVA) NI dinner at Parliament Buildings, where he used the occasion to welcome the BVA manifesto for animals, vets and public health.

“It is imperative the evidence-based opinion of the veterinary and agricultural community inform decision making on Brexit and other important policy matters,” he said.

“The BVA has made a strong and persuasive case against a no deal Brexit and called on all politicians to work together to avoid such an adverse outcome for animal agriculture.

“Northern Ireland has benefited greatly from the work of vets who qualified in other EU member states and have made the UK their home. The BVA is right to support them, their freedom of movement and contribution to our society.

“The veterinary community makes a valuable contribution to animal health and agrifood excellence in Northern Ireland. Alliance welcomes the BVA manifesto calls to reject a no deal Brexit, clarify animal sentience in law, include animal welfare on the curriculum, enhance animal welfare at slaughter and promote responsible pet ownership such as the puppy contract and kitten checklist.”
