Alliance Deputy Leader Stephen Farry MLA has said his party is committed to standing up for Northern Ireland, as he represented Alliance in a cross-party delegation meeting opposition leaders.
Dr Farry was speaking after the Remain parties met with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, Liberal Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable, SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford and others.
“Alliance is committed to standing up for Northern Ireland. The UK Government needs to be listening to the real voices of this region regarding Brexit rather than the distorted and destructive view of the DUP,” said Dr Farry.
“These are critical weeks ahead in which a Withdrawal Agreement can be concluded. Our preference continues to be a People’s Vote or the UK as a whole remaining in a Customs Union and Single Market.
“However, final agreement on the backstop is crucial to any Brexit deal. That can only be on the basis of the EU draft which the UK Government has already signed up to. The backstop is not being imposed on Northern Ireland and does not damage our economy or undermine its constitutional position.
“We don’t need to be protected from the backstop as the current Government narrative would suggest but rather it is something to be embraced with confidence.”
