Lord Mayor Nuala McAllister has welcomed plans to award Senator George Mitchell and former President Bill Clinton the Freedom of Belfast.
The Alliance Councillor for North Belfast was speaking after proposals were given the go-ahead at a special meeting of the Council’s Strategic, Policy and Resource Committee on Tuesday morning.
Lord Mayor, Councillor Nuala McAllister said: “It gives my Alliance colleagues and I great pride in seconding calls for these two great peacekeepers to be awarded the Freedom of Belfast.
“Almost 20 years ago the Good Friday Agreement set us on the road to peace, so it is fitting that in 2018 two of the key players in delivering hope for everyone across Northern Ireland should be recognised for the part they played in our process.
“It is through contributions like this that I am here as Lord Mayor today, promoting a global Belfast on the world stage, celebrating the open, inclusive and tolerant society that those involved in discussions in 1998 believed possible.”
