Lyttle says attempted dog poisoning reckless act of animal cruelty

Belfast City Council has said it is aware of dog food sprayed with anti-freeze being left on the stretch of greenway in East Belfast, with at least one dog believed to have been affected. Symptoms, which can appear within an hour of an animal swallowing the poison, include a dog becoming unsteady on its feet and drooling from the mouth.

“The Comber Greenway hosts a huge number of animal-loving dog walkers on a daily basis. It is a fantastic facility, so for someone to allegedly leave poison in what appears to be a deliberate attempt to affect dogs is a disgustingly reckless act of animal cruelty,” said Mr Lyttle.

“I have been in contact with the PSNI and Belfast City Council’s animal welfare and parks departments, and have been assured they are taking this matter seriously and actively investigating it.

“I would urge anyone using the Greenway to exercise vigilance and keep their dogs on their leads to ensure safety. Anybody with information should contact the police with it immediately.”
