Donnelly disappointment over Electoral Office closure

Alliance activist Stephen Donnelly has expressed his concern and disappointment over reports Omagh Electoral Office will close its doors for good in December.

The local campaigner was speaking after the decision was taken despite a public consultation over the future of two other Northern Ireland district offices still on-going. If the closure goes ahead the office’s functions will be transferred to Derry-Londonderry.

Stephen Donnelly said: “This is an extremely concerning move and one that has the potential to have a serious impact on electoral services across Omagh.

“While it might seem a simple move to some, the vast majority of people affected by this decision live in isolated, rural areas of the West Tyrone and Fermanagh and South Tyrone constituencies and the question of access is a serious problem. Derry-Londonderry is a significant distance to travel for those who need to access services and don’t have easy access to transport.

“The rise in turnout in recent elections is a demonstration of a public that is more politically engaged and is eager to participate in the democratic process. We should not carelessly put barriers in the way of that that enthusiasm.”
