Lyttle: Adherence to the rule of law vital for parading

Alliance East Belfast MLA, Chris Lyttle, has proposed an amendment to an Assembly debate on parading that called for all sides to demonstrate unambiguous adherence to the rule of law.

Chris Lyttle MLA said: “In the absence of new arrangements on the regulation of parading; respect, restraint and tolerance should be what governs our approach to parades, however there must also be an unambiguous adherence to the rule of law. This includes the lawful determinations of the existing Parades Commission.

“The Police are unfortunately being put in a position of shock absorbers due to the failure to resolve the issue of parading. I want to thank all of our Police Officers who have been put a challenging and unnecessary situation.

“Last year, political leaders agreed to a statement in which they gave their support for the rule of law and called for the decisions of the Parades Commission to be observed. I hope that all parties will again agree to these principles to ensure a peaceful summer.

“We must not concentrate on the negative headlines being created by parading, instead we should focus on the more positive aspect of culture. The majority of parades pass off without incident and the number of bands is increasing. Disputes over a small number of parades is not evidence of a widespread culture war.

“Leaders must reach agreement on the issues of parades, flags and the past at the coming all-party talks.”
