Chris Lyttle MLA said:”The decision to murder and secretly bury the bodies of ‘the disappeared’ will forever remain one of the darkest episodes of the Troubles. It shows the cruel and callous nature of the terrorists that they wouldn’t even allow the relatives of these victims the chance to grieve over a body. I cannot imagine the pain that these relatives have gone through.
“The work to locate the bodies of the disappeared has been a difficult and complicated task due to the length of time since they were buried and aim of those responsible to make sure that the graves wouldn’t be located.
“Attempts to locate ‘the disappeared’ are part of the legacy of the past and this moving documentary has shown what a challenging task it is. The Haass talks have provided an opportunity for us to find agreement on a comprehensive process to deal with the legacy of the past. I hope all sides will work towards reaching agreement on any such process.
“This documentary has also raised questions that Gerry Adams has yet to fully answer about what information he has about ‘the disappeared’. There is a need for complete disclosure from all republicans about these harrowing crimes.
“I am deeply saddened that not all of the bodies have been located. I would urge anybody with any information about these murders and secret burials to come forward and contact either the police or the Independent Commission for the Location of Victims Remains.”
