McCarthy calls on Poots to cease legal action to end confusion over adoption by civil partners

Alliance Health spokesperson Kieran McCarthy MLA has again called on the Health Minister to cease his legal action against adoption by civil partners. In June, the Court of Appeals ruled that legislation which prevents civil partners adopting is unlawful, however Edwin Poots is appealing this decision which is creating confusion.

Kieran McCarthy MLA said: “I would again call on Edwin Poots to cease his legal action. He is wasting taxpayers’ money to fight a personal campaign.

“There are too many children in our care system for us to be deciding who has the right to apply to adopt a child. It should be about whether a couple can provide a loving and safe home for a child.

“As Mr Poots is a Unionist, I would have thought he would have been in favour of Northern Ireland falling into line with the rest of the UK which allows civil partners to adopt.”
