Blair condemns violence in north Belfast

Belfast Alliance spokesperson John Blair has condemned outbreaks of violence across North Belfast tonight.

Mr Blair was speaking as violence continued, with at least six police officers and Nigel Dodds MP injured in disturbances.

Councillor John Blair said: “I am utterly disgusted at what has unfolded on our streets tonight. I would appeal for an immediate end to all violence and call everyone involved to get off the streets.

“My thoughts are with the injured and their families, including Nigel Dodds MP, and I hope we see no more injuries throughout the night. There is absolutely no excuse for any kind of violence, which has put the safety of the whole community at risk.

“Northern Ireland as a whole will again suffer in the long run, with these violent scenes being shown around the world. Anyone with influence – political or community – must use it to encourage peace and respect, rather than questioning certain decisions.

“The people behind this violence must be caught and dealt with before the courts. I would appeal to anyone with information to contact the PSNI immediately.”
