The East Belfast MLA was speaking after Wiggins made cycling history, becoming the first Britain ever to lift the title. He said the Executive must make urgent changes to the current infrastructure, with the aim of encouraging more people to take up cycling.
Chris Lyttle MLA said: “Bradley Wiggins’s win has increased the popularity of cycling, putting it firmly back in the public eye. Not only does it have great health benefits, but cycling is also a cost effective and alternative way to travel.
“Now is the time to address the problems facing cyclists in Northern Ireland. The Executive needs to make serious changes to the current infrastructure, making cycling safer and easier for everyone.
“The existing cycle network must be developed further. This is not only about an increase in the number of cycle lanes, but also assessing the location and quality of all lanes, ensuring lanes flow continually and that current cycle lanes are policed correctly and kept clear for bike users.
“Alliance will be continuing to put pressure on the Minister to ensure cycling infrastructure and safety is improved.
“Once steps have been taken to improve the current infrastructure more people will be encouraged to reduce their reliance on cars, turning to cycling as a viable alternative.”
