Dickson says Executive funding to combat flooding is no long term solution

Alliance Regional Development spokesperson Stewart Dickson MLA has said that the £10 million of funding for flood alleviation schemes in East Antrim, East Belfast and South Belfast is only a sticking plaster. The schemes were already planned to be carried out in the near future.

Stewart Dickson MLA said: “I do of course welcome any effort to help decrease the potential of serious flooding. I have seen first hand the devastation that flooding can do to homes and businesses and I hope that these schemes will lead to fewer people being flooded in the future.

“But this announcement is just a short term sticking plaster. I would have expected the Regional Development and the Finance Minister to wake up and realise that what the public are crying out for is a long term solution, which is surely about how we fund our water system so we can see serious investment in an outdated network.

“I will be holding the Executive to account to ensure that they listen to the public and the mistakes of last week are not repeated.”
