Stormont must provide funding for Special Olympics Ulster

Alliance Culture, Arts and Leisure Spokesperson Kieran McCarthy MLA has expressed disgust that the Health Minister Michael McGimpsey has said in a letter that he is unable to provide funding for Special Olympics Ulster. Kieran McCarthy has vowed to continue his campaign to ensure that funding is provided from Stormont for the organisation.

Kieran McCarthy MLA said: “The Health Minister said in a letter he was unable to provide funding for Special Olympics Ulster. I am deeply concerned about this and we need action to safeguard funding for the group.

“It is essential that the excellent work of Special Olympics Ulster can continue and it would be appalling if government here cannot provide the necessary resources for this to happen.

“I raised the issue of funding for the organisation in the Assembly chamber this week and I will continue to campaign on this issue. It would be shameful and totally disgraceful if adequate funding was not to be forthcoming from government here.

“We are trying to promote sport for everyone and the fact that the Health Minister said he is unable to provide these funds is deeply worrying. What kind of message does this send out? Devolution is all about delivery and we need to see delivery in the future to ensure adequate resourcing for Special Olympics Ulster.”
