Trend of pensioner attacks is major concern

Alliance MLA Trevor Lunn has said that the recent spate of attacks on pensioners is something which must be addressed to allay fears that older people may have. A woman in her seventies was tied up in her house in Cookstown yesterday evening and an elderly man was attacked with a screwdriver in Newtownabbey in his home on Monday evening.

Trevor Lunn MLA said: “These incidents are incomprehensible and the trauma caused must be intolerable. My thoughts are with the victims and I hope that the perpetrators can be caught and someday realise the cowardice of their actions.

“When one takes into account the current freezing conditions and difficulty of access to some areas, many older people must feel extremely isolated and quite vulnerable. I welcome moves to put more police on the beat but this police work must be matched by action in the Stormont Executive to provide more support for older people.”
