Jones condemns East Belfast shop robbery

East Belfast Alliance Party Councillor Mervyn Jones has expressed shock at news that a shop on the Newtownards Road was robbed by someone carrying a knife. The incident occurred just before 8pm last night at a newsagent near Lendrick Street, where a man entered the shop armed with a butchers knife and escaped with cigarettes and money.

Cllr Mervyn Jones said: “This is a deeply disturbing incident. To threaten someone with a knife in a robbery illustrates how dangerous this individual is.

“I feel for the owner and staff at the shop at this difficult time. This must have been an extremely traumatic ordeal and I would ask anyone who can help police catch the culprit to call them immediately.”
