Rise in unemployment shows need for radical approach on economy

Alliance Enterprise Spokesperson Seán Neeson MLA has said that the increase in the number of people claiming unemployment benefit underlines the need for radical approaches to be taken to boost the economy. The Labour Force Survey released figures showing that the number of people claiming job seekers allowance has risen by 2,000 in the past month.

Seán Neeson MLA said: “This rise in unemployment figures shows the serious impact the global economic downturn is having on Northern Ireland.

“We can however address this through the implementation of radical policies to ensure we maximise our potential in relation to the green economy.

“Many households are having an extremely tough time and the Executive needs to look to new ways to create new employment here. They need to look at advancing capital projects and investing in infrastructure. They must also consider using home insulation projects to assist the construction sector and help reduce heating bills for people in Northern Ireland.”
