Cllr Mervyn Jones, who is on the city council’s Environmental Health Committee said: “Its great news that the people of Belfast are recycling more than 20% of household waste.
“In the Christmas period its really important that people are recycling, as this is the time of year when far more household waste than normal is produced.
“Christmas cards, wrapping paper and packaging from presents can go into the recycling bin. Belfast City Council even recycles old Christmas trees, so by going green after the festive period, everyone can make a big difference for the environment.
“The recycling figures for Belfast are a vast improvement on those from previous years and indicate a very positive trend.
“I am very pleased that people in Belfast are acknowledging the need to recycle more and would encourage people to see if they can do even more to protect the environment.”
