ALLIANCE Councillor Sara Duncan has welcomed moves to introduce more polling stations in Northern Ireland.
Cllr Duncan, who highlighted problems with the lack of polling facilities in June 2001, said: “I am very glad that the Electoral Office has taken this action. In Newtownbreda in 2001, up to 150 people weren’t able to vote in the Westminster and local council elections, through no fault of their own, because of extended delays at the local primary school.
“Even those who had waited around 45 minutes were unable to get in to exercise their democratic rights. And 150 votes could easily change the overall picture in an election.
“Hopefully, these new measures will mean no-one will be denied the opportunity to take part in the democratic process.”
