Alliance Strangford MLA Kellie Armstrong has urged householders to start preparing for winter.
Kellie Armstrong said: “With the dark nights in and temperatures falling it is time to start making preparations for the winter months. It’s important that all householders, but particularly those who are older or vulnerable make appropriate plans to be comfortable in their homes. We need to avoid the situation where someone on a limited budget has to choose to heat or eat.
“The Social Security Agency is in the process of sending out the Winter Fuel Payments, so I would urge everyone eligible to make sure their payment is received in their bank account. This payment will go some way to offset rising fuel costs, particularly home heating oil, which has gone up in price mainly due to the fall in the value of sterling since the Brexit vote.
“No matter what type of fuel is used householders can take positive steps to save money and make their homes more energy efficient. That can include better home insulation, using energy efficient lighting and ensuring boilers are regularly serviced. In many areas householders have joined an oil buying club, where bulk buying can lead to real cash savings. Oil is more expensive if bought in small quantities, so it makes good economic sense to shop around and buy at the best price.
“Bryson Energy is a charity providing free advice to householders on how to save on energy bills. The Bryson Energy Advice Line is 0800 1422 865, which us a free call. I would encourage Strangford residents to make use of this valuable free service.”
