Racist attack reminder that we must do more to overturn divisive attitudes

The Alliance Party in Castlereagh has said a racist attack in Dundonald last night will have shocked local people – but serves as a reminder that we must do more to change divisive attitudes.

Castlereagh Councillor and Party Vice Chair Michael Long stated: “Like most people in Castlereagh, I am appalled that two men could be picked upon for an attack just because of the colour of their skin. Most people do not want anything to do with the minority that carries out such attacks.

“I welcome the fact the police moved quickly, and would call on anyone who saw anything to pass on any information they have.”

His colleague on Castlereagh Council and representative of the area Judith Cochrane stated: “This attack is a reminder of how far we have to go to overturn these attitudes. Divisive attitudes of all sorts remain prevalent in our society. This ‘them’ and ‘us’ culture cannot continue.”

Cllr Cochrane is a member of the party’s youth wing, which has been promient for several years working on anti-racism campaigns with the Anti-Racist Network among others.
