It is believed the victim was stabbed during the incident in Dunluce Avenue in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Councillor Emmet McDonough Brown said: “This was an extremely serious incident and must be condemned and those behind it wouldn’t be allowed to disrupt the local community.
“I hope the victim will be able to make a full recovery from such a serious injury in the coming weeks and months and my thoughts are with him at this time.
“Those behind this despicable attack must be apprehended before they can strike again and I would urge anyone with information to contact the PSNI as soon as possible.”
