Alliance Councillor Chris McCaw has secured cross-party support for a new Litter Strategy for Causeway Coast and Glens.
The first to be introduced in Northern Ireland, the move will tackle the growing level of litter in the area, drawing on the experience of numerous Councils across the rest of the UK.
Speaking after the latest Environmental Services Committee meeting, Chris said: “Many local residents have been dismayed by the level of litter in the area. The Litter Strategy will involve a review of infrastructure, enforcement and partnerships and will hopefully be the start of changing attitudes on this issue.
“I’m delighted to have support from across the Council on this important issue. As a resident of Portrush, I have had so many people contacting me in frustration and anger about the litter situation. I believe now is the time to have a long term strategy on the issue to keep this a great place to live and work and also to protect our tourism industry.
“People want action and we are determined to deliver, I look forward to council working with local groups, businesses and schools on education and reducing litter. Our environment must be protected.”
