Alliance Education spokesperson Chris Lyttle has welcomed today’s announcement that £12 million has now been set aside for substitute teachers pay.
Mr Lyttle – Chair of the Education Committee said the move would be a welcome boost of morale for the education sector, that up until now had witnessed a key part of Northern Ireland’s teaching sector unclear over their financial futures.
He added: “This is a long overdue move, yet whilst it is welcome, it is slightly disappointing that it has taken almost three months of schools being closed for this to be actioned. My thoughts are with all those who have endured financial hardship and distress during this uncertain time.
“The timescale now will be crucial and I hope the Education Minister will be able to follow through on the details he has laid out so that what has become a financial nightmare for some can be overcome quickly.
“The past few months of home schooling will have led to a new appreciation for the work that our teachers do, and are continuing to do as best they can during lockdown. It is essential we secure the long term future of our skilled education workforce.”
