The MLA for East Belfast was speaking as the Holywood golfer reclaimed his number one position in the rankings, after breaking records to become PGA Champion 2012. The latest sporting success comes after Northern Ireland athletes recorded their most successful Olympic Games to date.
Chris Lyttle MLA said: “As the Olympic Games came to a close last night Northern Ireland showed the world again its sporting talent. I want to congratulate Rory McIIroy on this historic achievement, which keeps Northern Ireland at the centre of world golf.
“I also want to pay tribute to all the Northern Ireland Olympians and volunteers who helped make London 2012 our most successful games to date. To bring home five medals has surpassed expectations and made us all very proud of this achievement.
“Now is the time to invest in our sporting talent, present and future, as Northern Ireland aims to continue this fantastic success.
“2013 will see another great sporting event in Northern Ireland, as we host the World Police & Fire Games. Over the past few weeks sporting enthusiasm has grown and I would call on everyone to get behind this event and find out more about opportunities to get involved at the 2013 games from Volunteer Now.”
