Incidents of abuse and neglect have been reported by formers residents of the institution that was located in Dublin. It was a place for unmarried Protestant mothers and their children.
Chris Lyttle MLA said: “I was very disappointed by the decision of the Irish Government to prevent Bethany Home survivors from accessing this redress scheme.
“Considering what went on in this institution, I think they are lacking empathy by not including this set of survivors in this redress scheme.
“It is clear that the abuse and neglect they suffered is exactly what this scheme was designed to address.
“I hope the Irish Government will reconsider their decision and offer the support and redress that these survivors should have been given in the first place.”
