Alliance MLA Chris Lyttle has called for a special dedicated press conference for children and young people by the First and Deputy First Ministers to answer questions relating to the coronavirus pandemic.
Mr Lyttle, who took part in an online discussion with the Northern Ireland Youth Forum last week on the issue, said similar press conferences by leaders in other countries had proven successful. He added many young people had concerns about the crisis, which such an event could help allay.
“There are many issues impacting children and young people as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, such as their education being affected, their hobbies and interests being cancelled, and being unable to see their friends.
“We have seen countries such as Norway, Denmark and New Zealand successfully conduct similar events, with children and young people asking questions to help them understand the pandemic, while reassuring them.
“I have now written to the First and Deputy First Ministers to request they hold such a dedicated press conference for children and young people. It would help engage young people with the work being undertaken during the crisis, allowing them to ask questions on their concerns and address issues relevant to them.”
