Lunn raises concerns over lack of integrated sector representation on new education body

Alliance Education spokesperson, Trevor Lunn MLA, has welcomed the progress on the Education Bill to set up a single education authority.

He has, however, raised concerns over the lack of representation on the new body for the Integrated and Irish Medium sectors. Mr Lunn was speaking during the second stage of the legislation in the Assembly

Trevor Lunn MLA said: “After many years of delays, I am glad that there is finally agreement on a new single education body. This is the type of major public sector reform that should have occurred years ago and would have gone some way to properly manage our finances.

“I am, however, concerned at the lack of representation for the Integrated and Irish Medium sectors on the new body. We have several different education sectors and I believe that they should all be represented.

“The Executive has a legal duty to facilitate and encourage the growth of integrated education; something that I think would be hindered by their absence from the new board. It is also paramount that this new body seeks to promote this sector.

“I will be looking to submit amendments at the next stage that will ensure that all sectors are represented on the new body.”
