Tomorrow’s local government election is a chance to send a message about the desire for positive, progressive politics, Alliance Leader Naomi Long MLA has said.

Mrs Long said Thursday’s poll, while a local government election, was also an opportunity to show the DUP and Sinn Féin a desire for the return of power-sharing at the Assembly.

“While many people appreciate the positive leadership Alliance has provided and our attempts to break the logjam at Stormont, it is clear so many are fed up with the state of politics in general at the current time. While we understand and share the frustration and anger people have, it is vital they don’t fall into the trap of not bothering to vote.

“In contrast to the impasse at the Assembly and Brexit-inspired deadlock at Westminster, Councils are the only tier of local government still delivering for people. While things are stagnating elsewhere, Councils are making crucial decisions about how to spend millions of pounds of your money and how to shape your community.

“Therefore a vote for Alliance is a vote for transparent and open politics which will get things done for you. And while it is a local government election, voting for Alliance will also send a clear message to the DUP and Sinn Féin people want to see positive, progressive and practical politics at the Assembly as well.

“Change is possible but it is not inevitable. People need to vote for it and tomorrow is their chance to do just that. Each vote matters and if they use it to demand better, Alliance will deliver just that.”
