sports journalist Dr Malcolm Brodie, who has died at the age of 86.
Cllr Long said Dr Brodie, who lived in the borough for many years, was the
leading light in local sports reporting, and journalism would be poorer for his
passing.
“Malcolm’s name was not only synonymous with sports writing in Northern Ireland
but was a byword for honest, impartial reporting that was read by all,
regardless of class or creed.
“So many other journalists have stated Malcolm taught them everything they knew
about the industry and so it’s not far-fetched to say that without him, Northern
Ireland would not have much of a print media, particularly focusing on sports,
to speak of.
“The fact he was so well-known in football circles across the world is
testament to both the powerful writing he produced for so many years and also
his character. My thoughts are with his friends and family at this time.”
