Long extends sympathy to people of Nice

Alliance Deputy Leader Naomi Long has said once again Northern Ireland stands in solidarity with France following a terror attack on the southern city of Nice.

A lorry drove into a crowd during Bastille Day celebrations in the city, leaving at least 84 dead, including many children. Up to 20 people are in a critical condition in hospital. The driver was shot dead by police.

“My thoughts, prayers and sympathies are with the people of Nice and the loved ones of the victims,” said Mrs Long.

“Many local people will have experienced the beauty of Nice recently, as Northern Ireland played their first game at the European Championship there. The people of Nice showed the supporters the very best hospitality and we stand with them in solidarity after this horror.

“The proximity of France to us and the fact they have been an ally in good times and bad means people from here will be particularly hit by this incident. This is the latest in a series of similar such attacks, designed to spread terror and inspire fear across the world.

“However, we will not let those behind these acts of violence win. We live in a liberal, democratic society and it is up to every one of us to show the benefits of that and not allowing terrorism to undermine us in doing so.”
