The ‘Going For Growth’ agri-food strategy was launched at last year’s Balmoral Show, yet the Executive has failed to agree a way forward to support this sector. Ms Lo was speaking as she attended the annual Balmoral Show.
Anna Lo MLA said: “While the Executive has failed to find a way forward to support the agri-food sector, I am aiming high for a key sector that could massively boost our economy. Our agri-food sector provides nearly 100,000 jobs and has sales of over £4billion, yet the Executive has failed to support this industry.
“Northern Ireland has some outstanding produce, yet we are not fully maximising the potential that exists in this sector.
“This is yet another example of the Executive failing to reach agreement on a key issue that could help economic growth. I am very frustrated that this strategy appears to have been left in limbo for a number of months with very little possibility of action.
“However, Alliance is looking to progress aspects of this document where possible, with Employment Minister, Stephen Farry, stating that he will work with the sector to address skills and training needs through the ‘Future Skills Action Group for the Food and Drink Industry’.”
