Lo highlights need for racial equality strategy following racist attack

Alliance South Belfast MLA, Anna Lo, has condemned a racist attack that took place in Belfast city centre on Wednesday evening. A man was attacked on Royal Avenue, while racist abuse was shouted at him. Two men aged 18 and 25 were arrested by the Police. The 45 year old victim suffered minor injuries.

Anna Lo MLA said: “I am absolutely disgusted that yet again somebody has been subjected to a racist attack. Racism has no place in our society

“The Assembly just recently passed an Alliance amendment calling for the urgent publication of the Racial Equality Strategy which we have been waiting on for seven years. The First and deputy First Ministers cannot delay this important strategy any longer. Thousands of people attended two rallies in Belfast and gave a clear message that they wanted this strategy published now.

“The people who carried out this crime are dangerous and callous individuals who would attack a person just because of their race. I am pleased that the Police have made two arrests in relation to this attack. It is important that the perpetrators of racist attacks are successfully prosecuted to send a clear message that those who carry out these crimes will face justice in the courts.”
