Belfast City Council is to assess how it can provide a new funding stream aimed at helping local communities hoping to transform their alleyways, thanks to Alliance Councillor Michelle Kelly.
The move follows the previous success of projects including the Wildflower Alley, with Council now set to liaise with the Department for Communities, Infrastructure and Justice and other stakeholders to co-ordinate a programme of funding, support and assistance to communities and residents who wish to similarly transform their alleyways.
Michelle said: “We’ve seen the possibilities to utilise the space and the benefits that it has for communities – especially during lockdown when a calming outside space became a welcome escape for many.
“I’ve already been in touch with many local groups and statutory organisations who are keen to see the project progress and am delighted Belfast City Council has not only backed the plans, but will spearhead a way forward to bring it all together.
“We are still facing a major health pandemic as the fight against Covid-19 continues. With this in mind, and with the current easing of lockdown restrictions, we must take the opportunities now to provide a shared space for the community to enjoy.”
