An independent review of the education system is a welcome move but long overdue, Alliance’s Chris Lyttle MLA has said.

Speaking after the review was announced by Education Minister Peter Weir, Mr Lyttle – who received Assembly backing after calling for such a review last year – said a review of the entire system was needed to see whether it was still fit for purpose.

The independent review, a commitment in the New Decade, New Approach agreement, will begin later in 2021 and is expected to last 18 months.

“I welcome the launch of this review, which is long overdue from the Minister,” said Mr Lyttle.

“Our education system is broke and broken. A review of the system has long been needed to ensure it is fit for purpose, particularly as the majority of MLAs backed an Alliance proposal last year for such a review.

“A root and branch review can deliver an objective, evidence-based assessment of where our education system is at and where it needs to go. With it, we can provide the basis of the reform desperately needed, enabling us to give our children and young people the education they deserve.”
