The Alliance Group Leader was speaking after the latest meeting of Belfast City Council, which saw Unionist Councillors abstain from voting on the motion, which passed with 30 votes.
Councillor Maire Hendron said: “I’m delighted the Council has formally decided to invite Pope Francis to Belfast during his tour of Ireland.
“The Pope is an international symbol of peace and it would mean so much for so many to be able to welcome him to Belfast.
“While no-one voted against the motion, it is disappointing that not everyone could fully support extending this invitation.”
