Alliance East Belfast MLA Chris Lyttle has welcomed speedy action taken by Belfast City Council to treat a dangerous species of plant in East Belfast. An invasion of the Giant Hogweed plant was located in the vicinity of Danny Blanchflower Stadium and the Sydenham By-Pass. The invasive species can grow 15 to 20 feet tall and is known to cause problems for native plants, wildlife and can cause damage to human skin.
Chris Lyttle MLA said: “It was of some concern when this issue was brought to my attention; however, I would commend the response from Belfast City Council Environmental Health Officers who have located and treated this invasive and potentially dangerous plant species in a speedy and professional manner in order to alleviate any risk to the public.
